History
A lot of people have made a lot of money drilling for oil in Texas. E.B. Kutscher and his brother, Lane Kutscher, might have done the same. The problem is starting your own oil company is expensive because of all the equipment that has to be bought.
So while working in the oil fields near Luling, Texas, E.B. got the idea to drill water wells for a living. Water did not pay as well as oil (provided you struck oil) but all kinds of people needed water wells drilled. Some owned homes in rural areas without water service, while others owned businesses that wanted to draw from their own water resources.
E.B. and Lane founded the company in 1925. Their mission was the same as it is now: To provide good quality water for the community. Kutscher Drilling provides residential and commercial water well drilling along with complete service and repair. The company provides customers with pumps, windmills, storage tanks, pressure tanks, water testing, filters and plugging wells.
In the early days, conditions were not as comfortable as they are now. Roads were less common and those that existed were not always in the best condition. E.B. and his wife Ethel "Posey" Kutscher, used to camp out while the wells were being drilled because it took too long to travel the dusty, bumpy roads. "It was a long way back home," Ethel said.
They drilled their first well on the Brinkhoeter place on FM 1101. Business picked up as word spread of Kutscher Drilling's skill. E.B. put it best: "I don't advertise," he said, "My work advertises itself."
E.B. worked at the company for more than half a century from 1925 to 1976. He eventually turned the business over to Robert E. and Charles R. Kutscher, who operated the business from 1976 to 2001. They later turned the business over to a third generation of the Kutscher family as represented by Daniel Kutscher, Robert's son.
The company not only has been run by three generations of the same family. It also has served several generations of customers, drilling water wells for the children and, in some cases, grandchildren of E.B. Kutscher's original customers.
Kutscher Drilling's eight employees serve customers in Comal and Hays Counties. Longtime employees serving fifty years are "Blue" Johnston and I.B. Calvin with Edgar Lauback serving forty years. The company has enjoyed tremendous success thanks for dedicated employees and customers who continue to refer friends and colleagues to them. Kutscher Drilling plans to continue its success by adhering to the family tradition of delivering quality customer service.
